TEKS to TAKS:

The Vocabulary of Measurement

Section 3: TEKS to TAKS:  Vocabulary and Task Analysis, Why Do It?

The Texas teacher has a valuable asset in the Texas Essential Skills and Skills document for each grade level.  As we become more assessment focused in our teaching knowing how the TEKS and the TAKS align, or work together, is enormously important.  Going through the process of discovering and using the terminology of assessment, students will become more likely to understand the questions as they are asked.

It is our purpose in this section, to help you learn how to take the TAKS results, and using the TEKS as your guide, discover all the possible reasons why students answered these particular questions incorrectly, and use that information, to analyze the tasks necessary for a student to do well on questions of that type.  We have included an example from the 4th grade and 7th grade TAKS.

As Texas teachers it is important that we use grade level Math TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) to guide our math curriculum.

In order to achieve this goal, appropriate instructional materials and lessons should be based on this information. It is imperative that we understand exactly what we are expected to teach to ensure our students’ mathematical success. For students to be as successful as they can be, it is vital that teachers identify and interpret the intended meaning of the verb used in each TEKS. As an example of this process, the following section, TAKS Verb ID, guides teachers through identifying target verbs using 4 th and 7th grade measurement TEKS and related TAKS questions.
