What We Know From Other Disciplines

Familiarity with vocabulary provides an entry point into the domain or subject matter (NRP: NICHD, 2000).

Learning the language of the content area is a first step toward deeper meaning (Goldman et al., 1999).

In reading it is possible to get comprehension from a passage from the use of contextual clues, even if a student misunderstands it at first (McKenzie, 1990).

Although the above ideas are from other disciplines, their strategies apply to the mathematics classroom increasing student comprehension and, ultimately, student achievement in the middle school mathematics classroom.
