Using Metacognitive Strategies and Scaffolding for Students in Problem-Solving

1. Scan the problem.

  • Are there any vocabulary words you do not understand?

2. Identify: What is the problem asking you to find?

  • What do you need to solve this problem?
  • How can you solve this problem?

3. Predict: Make a prediction.

  • Write all steps carefully, describing the process.

4. Solve the problem.

5. Summarize: Reflect on your work by rereading the question.

  • Does your answer make sense?
  • Could you explain how you solved the problem?
